Room-nights

A room-night is one room occupied for one night — the unit almost every hotel metric is built from.

Formula

Room-nights sold = Σ (rooms in a booking × nights of that booking)

Worked example

  1. A guest takes two rooms for three nights: 2 × 3 = 6 room-nights sold.
  2. A 32-room property in a 31-day month has 992 room-nights available.

Why it matters

Confusing bookings with room-nights is the most common reporting error at this size. Twenty bookings could be twenty room-nights or two hundred.

Occupancy, ADR and RevPAR are all room-night arithmetic, so if this number is wrong all three are wrong together.

Day-use bookings are the common trap. Counted as a night they inflate room-nights and depress ADR at the same time, which is why they need to be a booking type of their own rather than a one-night stay.

In MangoHost

Every booking carries its night count, and room-nights are shown on the dashboard beside occupancy so the two are always read together.
